‘Accelerated Reader’ is a programme designed to personalise every child’s reading experience. At the start of the academic year, each Year 7 student takes an online test to assess their reading age and ability.
From these results we can match books to each learner to make sure that they are being supported and, at the same time, challenged with the aim to enhance their enjoyment of reading.
Members of the English department work closely with Mrs Mumby, our school’s librarian, to ensure that every child in Year 7 and Year 8 gets at least one hour a week to spend reading in the library. The students are encouraged to take quizzes after completing a book to check they have understood its content.
These results help staff to track each student’s progress. We know that students with a higher reading age find it easier to access texts across each subject area. It is part of a whole school policy to support and develop our students’ literacy skills and Accelerate reader plays a key role in doing this.
