Scientists are claiming that they have engineered a new immune cell that targets a specific type of blood cancer in their first trials. This new immune cell is called a T-Cell.
What is Cancer?
Cancer is a horrible disease that the healthiest of people can get. It can be terminal which means you only have a certain amount of time to live which can differ from a couple of years to a couple of months.
How did scientists create this new immune cell?
First the scientists take some of the patient’s blood and extracts the white blood cells from it and modify it with another certain cell and multiplies it. Then it goes into the patient’s blood and the new cell then tracks the cancer cell and when it connects with them it destroys them.
This has been an extraordinary success as people with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukaemia) saw their symptoms vanish completely! People with other types of blood cancer have response rates better than 80%. More than half blood cancer patients had complete remission.
As part of this report I decided to put the recent scientific findings to some of my fellow students to see what they had to say about it. Here are just a few quotes. “It’s really good and a new step for medical science!” Another student commented that “I thinks it’s good how they are getting near to stopping blood cancer” whilst another student added “It’s exciting as I know people who have sadly passed away from cancer, so this is a new step!”
As science progresses even more, this should hopefully mean that even more can be done to help prevent this awful disease from taking many more lives.
